This unit will define the purpose of a network, describe its operation at the technical level, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a network, and explore the methods employed to keep data safe. This unit is part of the theory content of the IGCSE syllabus.
Course Information
Unit Objectives
In this unit, you will:
- discuss the operation of network devices,
- explain the use of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in a network,
- investigate methods of storing data across networks,
- describe the characteristics and purpose of a network,
- evaluate security issues regarding data and understand how passwords and other authentication methods are important to keeping data safe,
- explain the use of malware software,
- describe electronic conferencing.
Unit Topics
This unit will cover the following topics:
- basic networking and common network devices,
- network environments - small, medium and large,
- cloud computing,
- network security and malware,
- electronic conferencing.
Unit Assessment
Assessments will take the form of:
- a network simulation task,
- two short written assignments based on past paper questions,
- two skills-strengthening quizzes,
- an end-of-unit test.
